Digitropia Analysis

The artist Miwa Matreyek who created the animation Digitopia using hands, people, drawings of scientific equipment, drawings of cities and mountains Miwa Matreyek has created a digital utopia through many animation techniques. What I first noticed when I was watching the animation was the abstract way in which the animator used hands to tell a story, because of they are the first thing that appears on the screen when watching the animation. The colors that I notice are black, white, red and blue. These colors remain the same throughout the animation. The shapes throughout the animation were geometric. The lines in Digitopia are ones that are similar to nature. The texture in the animation is ruff in the parts of the animation that are based on actual photography and smooth in the parts that are computer generated. The Animation uses light and darkness to portray different places, but you are still able to see weather it is night or day because the artist will just make the image lighter to portray the daylight and darker to portray nighttime. The overall mood of the animation is that we should think about how we can take something out of its natural and happy environment, mutilating it and forcing us to work for the human population. The colours that the animator has used in the animation are blue white black and in very small amounts red. The colours give the animation a relaxed feel when there is blue and white and a harsh feel when it is black and white. Lines have been used in a non abstract way. In this work the texture plays an important role in creating the feel of the particular frame. The artist used light and dark to portray good and bad. It makes it clear for the audience to see what the artist is trying to convince you is good and what is bad. The overall effect of work is that it is confronting about how we exploit creatures and other living things for our own selfish advantages. The artist made a clear statement about the exploitation of animals in the animation, I think it means that we should take a second think about how we take happy creatures out of their habitat and force them to work for us. It relates to my life because my family breeds horses and lives on a large farm, .and we need to be careful that we aren't mistreating them in any way as we are using their skills .This artwork communicates an important message about slavery whether it be with an animal or human. I believe that the work is a high quality animation although it may be too complex for many people to understand if the artist was wanting to get a message out to a lot of people, however I also think that the uses of the elements of art to tell the story were cleaver and effective if you gave the time to study further into the piece

utopia

SHOT 1 :

A sun with rays behind it , it makes me think that it is a sun because it is circular and it is floating above the mountains.

A god with arms such as the Hindu god Karli , because it has multiple arms and it blinks and seems to have energy surrounding it, hands on top look like a crown.

SHOT 2

There is a lady there that seem to look like mother earth, it represents nature because in the brain you can see a flower, a butterfly and a tree.

Mother Nature sitting in the mountains which is close to god. So it could also represent a god in heaven or Utopia , transmitting thoughts

She could be dreaming of Utopia

SHOT 3
The hands are getting the thoughts that have been transmited from the shot before and are looking around and talking about it like a community, they are like antenas.

They are creatures that live in Utopia that are receiving energy from the woman in the shot before.

There are nails in the hands like the nails in Jesus hand.

SHOT 4
The hands are destroying the city

SHOT 5

A person controlling the hand

A news reader is being taken around the city

The hands have been mutated to work for humans

Could be related to the exploration of nature.

SHOT 6

The hands are working for the lady, whos arm has been turned into something else

These hands dont have the dots on them, they could be younger versions of the hands that are being trained and exploited

SHOT 7

When the sun rises they open up like flowers

Like 'solar' Panels that follow the energy

It says 'im not suppose to feel' is the lyrics in the music

SHOT 8
These symbols of the drawing on the hands

Like there replacing humans
